How does the Breastbottle nurser simulate “letdown”?
A breastfeeding mother will usually experience what is called “letdown.” With letdown, the milk ducts in the breast contract, pushing milk toward the front of the breast. The experience can vary in intensity; milk may not leak at all, may start leaking, or may even spray out from the lactating mother’s breast. Letdown can happen in response to thoughts of the baby, hearing the baby cry, or from intense emotions of any kind. Nature intended letdown to, in part, help stimulate the infant to feed. Often the mother knows letdown is happening while nursing when she hears the baby start to swallow her milk. The Breastbottle nurser imitates this when the dome is gently squeezed by the caregiver or baby.
